And since the wonder of modern photo editing lets me, here's the colour combination of the blue surcote I'm not finished just yet for myself over the existing silver-green cotehardie.  Obviously, it's the same pic as before, only colour edited, so I'm not actually transformed into the actual cotehardie, but it's a colour approximation of how it will come together. My blue surcote has extra small gores in the sides for that tiny bit more added fullness but it's cut the same.

I just love the blue!  It really is that bright!

And what the heck, here's the colour combo for the next one.. burgundy cotehardie with gold surcote. They are the Abbey Tournament colours so I can wear the outfit for functions as well as our own group things. I will possibly cut it a little differently, but still the same basic idea. This will give me a few mix and match outfits along with the silk heraldic which isn't started yet, although I have the silk.

Remembering the first surcote in burgundy isn't for me I can still have the same burgundy/blue combo only in reverse with the new burgundy cotehardie (mostly finished; except buttons, buttonholes and embroidery) with the blue surcote over the top.

I'm still not over-keen on the gold one yet which was originally going to be the lining for the blue one, (except I decided a white lining would be just so much more striking), but I have the fabric and lining cut so I'll see what happens.  I could always sell it brand new and unworn, of course, but there is a certain reluctance amongst re-enactors to pay for the time put into anything hand-stitched or hand made.

Point in case also for shoes and furniture. Made with modern tools, the cost is quite sensible. made by hand it's a long time-consuming process which makes it quite prohibitive to sell.  Possibly the best idea is to keep it for myself for loaning or perhaps for when I have another coloured cotehardie to go underneath at some point in the future.

Happy new year!

To celebrate the first day in the incoming year 2010, I've spent a little time sewing on my own blue silk sideless, photographing one of the other sideless surcotes to best show the possible views for front, back and sides and fitting my man for seperate hose. I already have purchased a set of rather dashing burgundy wool hose from [info]thebellman which need a little tweak here and there for the best possible fit. I gotta tell you.. there's nothing quite like a man in seperate hose.

On the subject of surcotes, I am often surprised that a re-enactor can go to such lengths over a beautiful fitted cotehardie and then refuse to wear a surcote because "it will cover everything up".

I've included the front and side-on views here to show how a cunningly cut sutcote certainly neither conceals or detracts from what's being worn underneath. Excuse that I'm in regular clothes underneath and that the braid is tacked on and not stitched down at this point. The waistline of the jeans at the hip is where the jewelled/embroidered/expensive belt sits, so a surcote cut in this manner would still show off the costly things underneath and also the (hopefully) shapely wearer who is still maintaining a pretense of modesty.

For a lady whose figure is less than perfect, the lines of the surcote as seen from the front gives a flattering hourglass line which many swimwear companies use today to help their garments look more flattering as it draws the eye from the shoulder in to the waist (real or imagined) and then out to the hip.

It's still a work in progress. :)

My blue silk surcote and gold silk surcote will have the same cut as this one with the added bonus of the gold one also having the same flat metal woven braid as the burgundy one shown here. Which will be embroidered with garnets and pearls because we all know how much I love that kind of ostentatous display of gratuitous finery!

I really hate working with fake fur. No matter how expensive it is, there is very, very little which is remotely convincing in a white suitable for the garment of a noble Lady. As a result of this, I have de-furred a commission which specifically did not want real fur and unpinned the terrible (and yet very expensive) fake fur and pinned a rather fetching flat woven gold and silver metal thread braid instead. Already things are looking up. The result is more sumptous and I will add jewels and pearls onto the braid itself giving a very regal finished garment.

As a reward, I am going to spend the rest of today snuggled into my new armchair working on my own blue silk sideless surcote and possibly lining. I have enough of the metal braid to put aside for my upcoming gold silk sideless surcote which will look outstanding, especially when it's jewelled.

Once the weather clears up a little, I shall return to the pavillion painting and coat-of-arms on chests painting. I have commissioned a small table from [info]thebellman which I am rather excited about also. All I need now is a chair and I'm looking quite reasonable. Still a million little projects to go though. I MUST finish a wimple for the Abbey Tournament in July. I simply must.

It seems like everyone is talking about Avatar. I can understand why, it’s a good film, and a lot of fun. It’s a measure of the complexity and depth of the creation that knowledgeable geeks are seriously debating the fictional universe. Case in point, Kottke is confused. The TL;DR take away from his article is an argument that

Since it's been raining like crazy the last few days and I've been sick with this stupid chesty viris thing also, I'm digging out a few little sewing projects to work on in the next few days. These may or may not include sideless surcotes in silk for both me and our CEO, finishing off the jewelled fillet and possibly painting crests and rampant squirrels on the two new wooden chests. The weather is not lending itself to tent painting, so that's on hold for the moment.
